Sunshine on the Water Looks So Lovely

20110808_sun-on-the-water_002

This afternoon we went for a drive out to an RV supply store near Trenton and to pick up some groceries. It had been cloudy at times on our drive, but when we got back to the park the sun was shining and sparkling off the water. Immediately the John Denver song “Sunshine on my Shoulders” came to mind. Sunshine sometimes makes me high. How true no matter the season.

The water has been amazingly clear the last several days. It is so interesting to be able to see the rock formations underfoot. There are enormous slabs of shale, sandstone or some other smooth flat rock. There are long cracks in which green algae and little fish make their homes. And every so often there is a step down to another level of rock. You have to go pretty far out (250’ or so) to get to where the water is shoulder level and we haven’t made it out far enough to be over our heads. It is really the most pleasant footing – no yucky muck or long weeds to entangle legs.

Our greatest glory is not in never failing but in rising up every time we fail.

Ralph Waldo Emerson

  1. A sappy song, but one that has always been close to my heart. I was very sad when he died, but maybe it was OK because he was doing what he loved. Flying over the water in the sunshine.
