Spectacular inadequately describes the views from the summit of Sulphur Mountain, but it will have to do. Carm's comment at the top was that it was one of the most amazing places he'd ever visited. And it is. Amazing that is.
First there is the gondola ride, which for someone with a fear of heights is just a little scary (okay a lot). Thankfully the views were enough to distract me from a full freak out ;-)
After you get off the gondola there are several (and by several I mean hundreds and maybe thousands) of steps to go up to the top of the next ridge - Mount Sansom. From there you get a 360 degree view of the surrounding mountains. We could see just over Tunnel Mountain to where our campground is, we could see the centre of Banff, we could see Banff Springs Hotel and golf course. It was spectacular.
I took pictures of countless people against the grand panorama. We met people from all over the world: England, Australia, US. We ate ice cream at 7500 ft. I even had a chipmunk climb up on my shoulder!
We had gone up before 10 am and were glad we did. As it was by the time we left the place was packed.
The gondola trip alone made Banff a worthwhile visit.
