thirty years ago

Today is our 30th wedding anniversary. It seems like years ago (it was), but it could have been yesterday. Tonight we are celebrating with Kirsten, Shawn, and the girls - we don’t need a special celebration - we don’t take our relationship for granted and celebrate often. We might not plan an expensive supper out, but we don’t need that to remind ourselves of how lucky we are. A moment here, and a moment there are all we need to keep our love alive.

We don’t need gifts as mementos, but this year will get paintings done of Kabira and Bella, not really an anniversary gift, but one that captures 13 ½ years of our lives together.

Is it possible that we were ever that young? I was only 26! Carm was 35! Oh, so much has happened to us over the years… careers, parrots, horses, building this house, bipolar, camping, travelling, being retired. I wonder what we would have thought if we could have seen the path our future would take us. What advice would we give our younger selves if given the chance now?

Looking back, I’ve no regrets and only remember the love and support. I feel blessed.

Love is like a friendship caught on fire. In the beginning a flame, very pretty, often hot and fierce, but still only light and flickering. As love grows older, our hearts mature and our love becomes as coals, deep-burning and unquenchable.”
