it would be prudent

Our cabin was on the wrong side of the ship to see the Rock of Gibralter this morning, instead a huge bay with choppy waves dotted with large ships that had stopped to bunker spread out before our bleary eyes.

We got our first view of the rock when we went up to the buffet for breakfast - and wouldn’t you know, for one time I didn’t bring my camera to take photos so Carm ran back to the room to get his. Just close your eyes and conjure up that old commercial about Prudential insurance and you’ll get an outline of what we saw.

Today’s tour busses were nimble little vehicles and it was soon clear why they were small - the roads were narrow with wicked switchbacks. There were times I was sure we were going to tumble off the side of the road. Carm probably has bruises on his arm from where I was gripping it!

We were supposed to be taking the cable car up to the top of the rock, but alas, the wind was howling and the attraction was shut down for safety reasons. Never mind though, the tour added a few other stops. We first stopped at a lookout where we could see the coast of Africa - just 7 miles away.

From there we drove up up up to the caves.

After we emerged from the caves (and took a few minutes to look at the monkeys), we drove down and up and around to the tunnels. To get to the entrance we had to walk up a reasonably steep hill. Once in the cave the tour guide had a bunch of stories about the building of the tunnels. We walked down? and then up?

The tour description called it strenuous but I don’t think it was that bad. The 86 and 91 year old thought otherwise.

Aside from the wind, it was a beautiful sunny day, not warm (I needed my puffer coat), but it wasn’t freezing cold.

Tonight we had supper with a retired geologist that worked in the oil industry, and another lovely couple from Indiana. We had an interesting conversation about the pros and cons of vaccination. Did you know that if you’d had a heart transplant the people living with you couldn’t have the Shingrix vaccine?

Tonight’s show was a magician who bamboozled us and left even Carm convinced that it truly was magic. I’m not a huge fan of cutting people in half and those sorts of illusions, but card tricks are fun.

We wandered around for a bit and now we are back in our room (9pm) for a glass of wine and an early night. We might start watching the ‘Lion King’. Tomorrow is a sea day which means a sleep in! Hurrah! Then I think we have 7 straight days of excursions… I’m not sure how I’ll survive.
